Chrysnel Banzouzi: Trendsetta
The talent at Historically Black colleges is undeniable, as they contain some of the most creative students. Hampton University student, Journalist, and designer Chrysnel Banzouzi launched his streetwear brand Trendsetta this past February. While starting the clothing line was spontaneous, Banzouzi viewing himself as a creative sparked the brand Trendsetta, representing how he perceives black creativity and culture. Banzouzi says, "History has shown that we're the originators behind trends seen in society, particularly in entertainment and fashion. I want to recognize the culture in my brand."
As Banzouzi set forth to embrace the culture through his brand, he started with one of the most hyped commodities in fashion today: streetwear. Trendsetta will offer graphic t-shirts with the release in their summer collection "Follow The Trendsetta." The design features "a concrete way of recognizing what a "trendsetta" is. This detailed graphic highlights a black person with a lightbulb placed above as the imitator trails behind, mimicking the leading individual's style. The chinchillas are a reference to the '00s hip-hop fashions."
Starting a business is not all smooth sailing as it can be strenuous for anyone and designer Banzouzi can attest to that. He faced various obstacles when starting his clothing line, but reaching out to local business owners on campus for advice and guidance aided his success. However, he did not allow any obstacles to stand in his way, as it "showed my devotion in wanting to launch this brand. I had to accept that everything won't always go smoothly on the first attempts, especially when collaborating or relying on others." As for this designer's future, he is "going to be tight-lipped on what's to come in the future because it's best to move in silence." However, pre-orders for his second collection, ranging from small to 2XL, will be available on Friday, May 19 at noon EST. and officially be released June 2, 2023.
